Outdoor Solar Shades: Openness Factor, Privacy and View Explained

Outdoor solar shades manage sunlight while retaining some connection to the view. Their openness factor describes the proportion of fabric open between yarns, but it does not predict every result in a real installation.

Understand openness

A lower openness factor generally means a tighter weave and less direct view-through; a higher factor generally allows more visibility and daylight. Colour, construction, sun angle, glazing and brightness differences also affect the result.

Privacy changes after dark

Solar screen fabrics may offer daytime privacy when the exterior is brighter than the interior, but they are not guaranteed night-time privacy solutions. With indoor lights on after dark, people outside may be able to see in.

Balance glare and view

A tighter weave can reduce more direct glare but may reduce view clarity. Request samples and assess them facing the actual sun direction.

Check outdoor suitability

Confirm the complete system is rated for the intended exposure. Wind, rain, salt air, fixings and cleaning access matter. Do not assume every interior roller blind fabric is suitable outdoors.

  • Identify whether glare, view or privacy matters most.
  • Confirm evening privacy needs.
  • Check fabric, brackets and controls are suitable for outdoor use.
